CNE Invited to Attend the ASEAN Battery Technology Conference and Give a Speech
22 August 2024
On August 21, the 2nd ASEAN Battery Technology Conference jointly sponsored by the Singapore Battery Consortium (SBC), National Center for Sustainable Transportation (NCST) , Thai Energy Storage Technology Association (TEST), National Battery Research Institute (NBRI) of Indonesia, NanoMalaysia under the Ministry of Science, Technology and Innovation of Malaysia , and other organizations was held smoothly in Singapore. Dr. Zhang Bo, Executive Director of the Singapore Research Institute of Concord New Energy Group and Technical Consultant of Edge Power, was invited to attend the conference and gave a speech with the title of “Ion Sensing Technology Improves the Early Warning Ability of the Energy Storage System Safety” on the conference.
Speech of Dr. Zhang Bo
In the speech of Dr. Zhang Bo, Edge Power’s latest research achievements in the improvement of the safety of the energy storage system were shown together. He showed that changes in the battery status could be monitored with the ion sensing technology in real time and an early warning of potential safety risks could be given. Besides, Dr. Zhang Bo also shared his practice of integrating the ion sensor into the battery pack for field tests and showed the monitoring results of expansibility and change of temperature of the battery in case of thermal runaway in detail. The test data indicated that ion sensors had good performance in the improvement of the early warning ability of thermal runaway.
In the speech, Dr. Zhang further shared his team’s important discovery in the test of batteries with a long service life. Edge Power collected the data of pressure distribution of the battery in multiple charge-discharge cycles through the sensor and revealed the changes in the internal stress of the battery in different stages of cycles, which provided valuable data support for optimization of battery design and extending of battery life.
Edge Power is always committed to providing energy storage system solutions with long life and high safety and reliability, which have been verified in several projects. For example, in an industrial and commercial energy storage project in Jiangsu Province, Edge Power integrated the sensor into each battery module and connected it independently to BMS through the 4G network, successfully monitoring battery status in real time.
Dr. Zhang Bo stated that we could not effectively predict the safety risks brought by thermal runaway by relying on external temperature monitoring alone and the time of early warning was limited. The ion sensing technology is the only method with which we can have an in-depth understanding of the changes in the internal structure of batteries in the cycles at present. By accumulating test experience and monitoring the increasing rate of expansion force, SOC can be estimated more accurately, thus significantly improving the performance of BMS. This not only improves the use efficiency of batteries but also extends their service life, which fully shows the innovation and practice of Edge Power in the improvement of the safety and reliability of the energy storage technology.
